Saturday, December 5, was a great day for a parade in Aynor, SC.

The sun was out, the air was crisp, and the good folks of Aynor came out to watch Santa and his pals parade thru town this past Saturday during the 2015 Aynor Christmas Parade. Though small, the parade carried the Christmas spirit thru out the town. Many thanks to those that volunteered their time to organize the parade.

“Litter is making this country a pig pen” – Buddy Freeman

Aggressively, Buddy spoke about the littering problem in Horry County and shared the following:

Who Will Litter?

  • 75% of American admit to littering in the last 5 years
  • Common litter offender are men 18-34
  • People who eat fast food litter 2-time per week
  • people who drives 50 miles per day
  • people who go out for entertainment 1 night per week

Where Does Litter Come From?

House old trash that is dropped or spilled from garage collection

  • Construction / destruction sites
  • Trucks with uncovered loads
  • Predestrians
  • People in cars

Why Do People Litter?

  • Lazy
  • Do not Care
  • Litter causes litter
  • No sense of pride
  • Lack of punishment

Keep Horry County Beautiful has many opportunities to help keep the county clean.

For one, they offer amazing grants to any school or town that wants to clean up. It’s easy to apply and get approval if you’re a serious applicants.

Second, you can call them anytime for free bags, gloves, pick-up sticks etc if your interested in getting involved. This is great for team sports, organization, schools and business that want to make a different.

Aynor Chamber February Minutes of the Meeting

The 1st regular Aynor Chamber meeting of the year 2016 was held at the Aynor Inn at 12 pm on February 25th.

Members Present

Members new and old were in attendance included Michael McCracken Principal of Aynor High School along with Doug Hinson Athletic Director with the school we had 6 Waccamaw Indian people represented including Chief Buster Hatcher, Ashley Floyd Karate, Justin Newberry Mid-Atlantic Drainage, Craig Morrison, Paulette Johnson, and Keb Johnson.

After welcoming all present the meeting was called to order at 12 pm Michael McCracken gave the invocation.

Reading of Agenda & Approval of the Minutes

Being we had no minutes from the last meeting members voted on approval of the agenda. Motion was made to accept by Craig Morrison, seconded by Paulette motion carried.

Business

  • Discussion on membership dues was briefly touched on but mainly focused on things we could do to jump start our Chamber involvement and offering members information on how Paulette has completely revamped the Chamber’s website and new things we have in store as benefits for our members.
  • At this time the floor was turned over to Coach Buddy Freeman representing Keep Horry Beautiful discussing needs around our community that his organization would be willing to help. Coach Freeman talked about things from scheduling cleanup days to sponsoring memberships adopting some of our local roads.
  • Election of officers was tabled until our next meeting in March along with discussions of current bi-laws.
  • The fact that Aynor Tire Mart was named 18th best seller of Michelin Tires nationally was mentioned and applauded for their efforts.
  • Paulette explained how the interactive calendar on the Chamber website works and that a member can go in and add their own events and specials they might have coming up.
  • Current treasurer Page Ambrose was unable to attend the monthly meeting but dropped off the Chamber account information to reflect a balance of $5000.00+ in Conway National Bank.
  • Questions were answered and 2 requests were made in reference to becoming members. Ashley Floyd and Waccamaw Indian People expressed such interest.
  • The Chambers next meeting will be held on March 17, 2016 at Andy’s Pizza on 9th Avenue across from the Library.
  • The chamber is also starting a Business after hours 1 time per quarter. The 1st will be held at Aynor Town Hall 600 South Main Street on April 21, 2016 from 6-8 pm. Finger foods will be provided at this drop-in.

Motion was made by Craig Morrison and 2nd by Paulette to adjourn motion carried and the meeting ended at 12:53 pm.

March 17, 2016 Monthly Meeting

CALL TO ORDER

The 2nd regular Aynor Chamber meeting of the year 2016 was held at the Andy’s Pizza at 12 pm. Craig Morrison, Scott Johnson, Dr. Bill Altman, Paulette Johnson, Cindy Wilson, a member from the Waccamaw Indian People, and Keb Johnson were present.

AGENDA APPROVAL

After welcoming all present the meeting was called to order at 12 pm. Chamber voted on approval of the agenda. Motion was made to accept by Craig Morrison, seconded by Paulette motion carried.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

The minutes from February 25, 2016 was voted on to approve. Motion to approve was made by Scott Johnson and 2nd by Craig Morrison, motion carried.

GUEST SPEAKER

The floor was then turned over to Mrs. Sandy Davis of Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development. Sandy discussed some of the projects and ideas MBREDC were working on and the effects it would have on Aynor’s community businesses. Sandy has been with the EDC for 3 years and in that time has seen the EDC change hands 3 times so far and is impressed with their newest President Josh Kay. She touched on questions asked about the progress of the railway and how that would help lure manufacturing to the Horry County area. Sandy made mention of possible buyers into the Cools Springs Industrial Park along with Tele-Communications Companies coming to the beach area bringing in several high paying jobs to that community as well. The meeting was a round table discussion and a lot of information was given and questions were answered. The Chamber thanked Sandy for taking time out of her busy schedule to come be with us.

OLD BUSINESS

Membership dues were touched on along with how Paulette has continuously worked on the Chamber’s website and even more things we have in store as benefits for our members.

NEW BUSINESS

  • Election of officers was talked about as were the discussion of the Chambers current bi-laws. The fact that with such little participation at our monthly meetings, it is believed that voting on changing the Bi-Laws and election of officers may be done via email.
  • Paulette explained how the new membership renewals have been mailed out last week.
  • Chamber’s next regular meeting will be held at Ned’s on April 21, 2016 @12 pm.
  • The Chamber Business after hours for the 1st quarter will be held at Aynor Town Hall 600 South Main Street on April 21, 2016 from 6-8 pm. Finger foods will be provided at this event.

ADJOURNMENT

Motion was made by Craig Morrison and 2nd by Paulette to adjourn motion carried and the meeting ended at 1:05 pm.

How To Improve Your Business Using Facebook.

The Aynor Chamber of Commerce Welcomes Tiffany Andrews of the Myrtle Beach Convention Center as April Speaker.

Real Real-Time Engagement: Social media thrives on real-time engagement, but each year the window  for response becomes smaller and smaller. One of the key strategies marketers need to implement in 2016 is faster response times.

Tiffany AndrewsTiffany Andrews, a native of Rocky Mount, NC, obtained a BA in English Literature with a Minor in Communications from Fayetteville State University in 1996. A marketer for 20 years, she strives to push the envelope in creating unique branding concepts, creative messaging, SEO, marketing plans, media placement both traditional and non-traditional and social media awareness.  She joined the Myrtle Beach Convention Center in the fall of 2003, currently serving as the Sales and Marketing Administrator.  There she is responsible for advertising to convention decision-makers, enticing them to host their next conference at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. In 2007, she launched The Andrews Agency, a boutique advertising agency.  Her team is comprised of professionals eager to develop branding concepts, creative design, marketing plans, media placement traditional and digital, social media, and promotional ideas. She prides herself on being the “Go To Person” for creating measurable advertising campaigns and influencing consumer engagement.  Andrews strives to push the envelope in creating unique branding as it relates to all industries, with emphasis on tourism both convention and leisure, heritage tourism, fitness, electrical, apparel, restaurants, and pharmacy. I believe that it’s important to “Know your market and understand your end user. In the World of Advertising, we are bombarded with so many different messages through various portals. I recognize that advertising content is discretionary, so I focus on convenience.”

Tiffany is Chairman of the Board after serving three years as the President for the AAF of Coastal Carolinas an affiliate of the American Advertising Federation – a national organization that promotes excellence in advertising.  She serves as the Government Relations Chair for District 3 of AAF.  She continues to serve as a Commissioner for Horry County Higher Education after being appointed by Governor Nikki Haley in 2011.  She also volunteers at Loris High School and acts as the Chairwoman of their Advisory Board.   Believing that giving back to HBCU’s is essential, she serves as Co-Chair for Horry County United Negro College Fund, where she assists with the charity’s marketing exposure and fundraising.   In 2015, she was award by CAAHF (Carolina African American Heritage Foundation) as the Drum Major for Business and Marketing during their MLK event.

Outside the office, Tiffany’s favorite pastime is relaxing on her porch with her Doberman, admiring the pond turtles and fish, and an array of wild birds like the Carolina Chickadee, and a red head hummingbird. Tiffany’s most prized accomplishment is being available to help her mother when The Google is broken.

About The Speakers

JAMIE WILBURN

With over 25 years in marketing, public relations and sales promotion, Jamie brings a solid background in the areas of retail, hospitality and tourism to the Public Relations team. As the public relations coordinator, she is responsible for generating media coverage for clients, tracking coverage and developing media plans and proposals, as well as formulating press releases. During her 15 years at LHWH, Jamie has developed solid relationships with media at the local, regional, and national level.

Jamie is originally from the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from the University of Maryland. Currently, she resides in Myrtle Beach with her husband.

TRACY VREELAND

Tracy Vreeland is a public relations coordiantor at LHWH. She has been with the agency for almost two months. After two decades in the news business, she moved into public relations, working with United Way of Horry County for the past two years before joining LHWH. She graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and has pretty much stayed in the south ever since, making Myrtle Beach her permanent home.

Finish Your Profile

There’s nothing worse than visiting a Facebook Business page and the profile information isn’t completed. This is one of the easiest way to tell your story and help visitors understand your business.

Facebook Check-In

Encourage Facebook Check-In by offering discounts or free gifts for checking in. You could put a sticker in the door to remind visitors to check-in. Create a post about it and ask for reviews. However, make sure you always respond to reviews.

How to Write a Successful Press Release

Many thanks to Jamie Wilburn and Tracy Vreeland from LHWH for video conferencing us last month to talk about Press Releases. If you weren’t there, no problem. Here’s what they taught us:

News Release & Media Alerts

  • First, determine if the event or announcement is newsworthy and identify the new hook. Examples of press release could be new hire, public service or fundraising.
  • Then gather all pertinent information. Write in an inverted pyramid so the key points you want to convey are the last to be cut. Who, what, when, where and how should all be addressed if possible.
  • Develop a strong lead and draft the release.
  • Use a straight forward factual news writing style in a new release. Never write a release that sounds like an ad. Most of the release should be composed of verifiable facts. Draft and include quotes to convey points that are important, but may be more experiential and observational than factual. No flowery quote, just facts.
  • Always include your website and social media info in the press release.
  • It is always a good idea to have someone else proof read the press release before it goes out.
  • Media alerts are used to advise the press about news conferences and special events planned. They should both include the subject and brief background, event date, time, schedule and place and a contact person.

The Structure

  • Select and always use the same typeface for your release and alerts. Justify the type and set margins an inch from the side edges of the letterhead.
  • The heading “NEW RELEASE” at the top of the pae should be in caps and a larger type than the rest of the release.
  • Skip two lines and underneath the news release heading, type the contact person(s), phone number and email in smaller type.
  • Skip one to two lines, then add the headline in bold caps. Make it no longer than two lines.
  • Single-space between headline and body copy. Use 12 italic for datelines followed by a dash. The dateline should be in the format: “Month, Day, Year, City, State -,” The state should be abbreviated. Example: May 4, 2016, Aynor, S.C. –
  • Always include a boilerplate ( a summary that is “About the Business Name” ) at the end.
  • If the release is more than one page include the label “(more)” centered a the bottom of the first page and use the heading “Topic – Page 2” flush right on the second page. At the very end of the release, include the symbols “###” centered. If the release is one page and there is no room for “###” it may be omitted.

Headline Writing Tips

  • Answer the question: Why should the reader care or guess what happening today.
  • Use an “action verb” to make it more appealing
  • Convey what the rest of your press release is about.
  • Leave the reader wanting more – don’t put the kitchen sink in it.
  • Be crafted for your audience (technical, medical or general public). Your target audience.

A headline should not:

  • Use jargon or buzzword
  • Mislead the reader by referencing something that is not addressed in the release.

Where to find contacts?

  • The internet is the best place to find contacts for local publications, TV and radio stations.
  • Look for the authors in publication.
  • Online calendars

Send press releases to the executive producer or editor and special reporters.

How to send a press release

  • The preferred method of press release delivery is via email. Make sure you attached your press release and copy and paste the press release in the body of the email.
  • You should also include an image if you have one.
  • Never call and say “Did you get my press release”. Do call if you need to correct a mistake in the press release.
